The area above the mantle is painted faux stones to match the look of the real stones beneath the mantle the basket of flowers is not part of the painting

 

 TROMPE L' OEIL - (pronounced - trump loy) is a French phrase, which means, "to fool the eye". This is a technique used by artists to trick the viewer into believing that they are seeing something three-dimensional before them.
What truly fools the viewer is the artist's use of shadows which, if done correctly, will have you taking a second glance to see if the object is real or just a painted illusion.
